The Book of Mormon. Right. OK. So where do I start.

I can quite say it was unlike any musical I have ever seen before.

I had no clue about the story line, I had never heard any of the songs and had only seen the outrage on twitter. So I felt I was both under prepared and yet well prepared for the experience.

I queued outside the venue in anticipation. The Prince of Wales theatre is only a minutes walk from Leicester Square, perched discretely on the corner of a street. The inside is extremely small and classy, with no large entrance or foyer, and little yet decorative corridors that herd you to the auditorium.

It was quite funny when the doorman checked our tickets actually. He inspected the print out paper, looked at us with a bored expression and said 'you need to take the left stairs and head ALL the way to the back'. I capitalise the word 'all' as he seemed to vocally stress it with an additional roll of his eyes. How odd I thought. We had circle seats, albeit it further to the back, but still pretty damn good. We thanked him, entered and soon realised why he seemed so disgusted. The auditorium is so tiny, that the circle is the furthest away from the stage. There is no Balcony or Grand Tier. Fair dos.

Anyway, how ironic that such a quaint little venue houses such a loud and risky show.

It is written by the makers of South Park, so that gives you a pretty good idea of the type of comedy that ensues. Cue, a comical and camp look at the beliefs of the church. We see a group of newly graduated Mormons assigned to preach in countries across the globe. The duo we follow are assigned... Africa. That can only be a good thing, right? Right?

The duo consist of the uptight Elder Kevin Price, and the loose nut Elder Arnold Cunningham. The latter stole the show. Daylight blummin robbery. He's that socially awkward friend we've all been stuck with.

Yet, Arnold stole my heart too. Yes, he's annoying as hell. Wait, there was one scene in Hell and it was more than annoying. Watching Hitler 'grind' upon another person was frankly disturbing. So let me take that back. Arnold isn't as annoying as Hell. Just annoying. Like when a bug won't stop flying around your face, but you don't want to kill it because you'd feel bad. The poor thing doesn't realise what it's doing. That's a better comparison.

His comic timing and character was the best I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot of musicals.

He goes on to teach an African Tribe about the Book of Mormon. Unfortunately he has never actually read it. It's a bit boring he says. Now remember he is a... colourful, energetic character, that compulsively lies and has a big interest in science fictional characters. So let's just say his teachings had some creative license...

So, try to imagine every stereotype and insult you have heard, triple the offence of it, times that by 100 and you're still nowhere near close to this outrageous show. I am pretty sure I had my hand covering my mouth, attempting to hide my gaping jaw and hard to fight back snigger, the whole way through. Damn I was parched by the end. But, seriously I didn't know if I should or could laugh, cry or storm out.

As South Park are notorious for, they've thrown PC out of the window. No they've tied it to a brick and dropped it in to the ocean. No they've poured petrol all over it and watched it burn. No they nailed it to a cross and celebrated the absurdity of it. You get the idea.

Overall, the songs were ok, but it was the top class comedic characters and off the scale crazy plot that made this an unforgettable show.

All Hail the Book of... Arnold. Now buy your express ticket to the show that's high as f**k. Unless you're easily offended and/or have heart problems. This isn't for wimps. Peace out.

It begins on a popular reality TV show, where one boy changes 'is life forever...

Most of us 90s kids have a strong connection towards Disney. It was initially force fed on VHS in the hope of quietening us down and making us drop our Tamagotchi's, Pogs or Furby's, like some weird childhood initiation.

I love Disney whether I was brainwashed or not and Aladdin is near the very top of my list so the bar was set pretty damn high... But I can reveal, this musical did not disappoint.

It was colourful, blindingly so. All of the sets were devilishly dramatic. There were around 6570 costume changes. The dance numbers were exotic. The songs were nostalgic. The humour was on point. And the magic carpet did fly!

Ok so they couldn't have a real 50 foot snake, or a real talking parrot or a real trained monkey, but it just didn't seem to matter. Pfft, you're always told never to work with animals anyway.

Now the one man, or should I say mystic being that made this show oh so memorable was the ultra legendary, the superstar diva, the biggest thing since Kim Kardashians ass, The Genie! A showboat, show off and true show man. Buy tickets simply for the 'Friend like me' scene in the Cave of Wonders. E-P-I-C! *with a finger click and a head shake* is the best way to describe it.

Aladdin is one show stopper of a musical jam packed with toe tapping numbers and decorated with all the bells, whistles and golden lamps to match. If you have to pick one show to watch this year, make it Aladdin, you won't regret it.

Culturebean at Billy Elliot the Musical

Everyone has a talent. You don't choose it. It chooses you.

It might be something that frustrates you to the core. Something that makes you feel sick with nerves. Something that makes you cry until you can't no more. It proves your human and alive.

But you can either take that talent and embrace it. Make it your own. Breathe it. Be it. Take every opportunity it throws your way and better your life. Do it for you. Do it for your family.

Or throw it away because other people don't like it. Take their hate and jealousy and like rot, let it slowly eat away until there's nothing left.

I'm not saying it's going to be easy. God no, the world doesn't work that way. But I am saying it's your life. So ask yourself this one simple question.

Does it make YOU happy?

I've seen the film and yes it was great. But as a musical? I was pretty dubious. How was that going to work? I couldn't picture it. Are there any songs better than 'Electricity'? Doubt it. Would they find children that are good enough to play such a big part? Probably not. But I can assure you this musical blew. my. mind.

Billy, the son of a miner, stumbles upon a ballet class. As you can imagine, a young boy dancing in the North East through the Thatcher years and during the miners' strikes make for a whole load of barriers to crash through. So many so that a bulldozer might not even manage it...

But this young boy slams his foot onto the accelerator and smashes through those barriers at 70 mph, with the help of Mrs Wilkinson steering them into each and every one.

It's gritty. A real piece of drama with violent and dangerous scenes on the picket line.
It's light hearted. Thanks to his loopy gran, ballet sessions and best friend.
It's emotional. A tear jerker during tender moments with his mother and at times father.

But ultimately I couldn't have been more proud of the boy who played Billy, Lewis Smallman. Can I just clarify, I have no family or friend connections to him at all, which is why I find it so odd. Maybe I'm getting old or something. But his talent is INCREDIBLE and the angry dance was out of this world. He is the definition of a triple threat and I could gush about him all day.

Just go and book some bloody tickets and do not miss out on this unforgettable and inspirational Northern Powerhouse of a musical.

Culturebean at Les Miserables (on Broadway)

A young child, maybe around eight or nine years old, with shoulder length blonde hair and a freshly trimmed fringe sits on the plush red seat. Her little legs swing back and forth and her head sways left and right, admiring the spectacle around her.

She can see so many different people in front, to the side, up above and behind her. A man with jet black hair and a tie as blue as a smartie taps on his phone. A pretty young woman as pale as snow with hair as red as jelly-beans calls the usher for water. An older woman with peach coloured skin dusts her nose with foundation as fine as sherbet and two tall men in tops chequered like battenburg hold hands as they briskly walk to their retractable seats.

An excited hum resonates around the large room so much so that she can feel it vibrate through her chair. The air conditioning is switched on a touch too high and softly blows her fringe to one side whilst goose pimples prickle up on her skin. The stage is empty and dark with wooden objects to each side and a dusty look to the floor that reminds her of something she had seen in a pirate movie.

But she knows this isn't a pirate show. Her beautiful mother, with thin white and blonde hair, had told her as much as is sensible to a young child about the story. She has listened to the songs on repeat mostly when dancing in her living room and likes that her class has just started learning French so thinks maybe she will pronounce the characters names better.

The ushers wearing their funny boxes of treats make their last call and head up the aisle. Some flash their torches angrily, some rebalance their tray of items but most glance at the audience one last time.

The young girl looks up to her glowing mother with a weary smile but not from nerves, no, from an unconfident kind of excitement and anticipation that a young child might experience at their first musical. Then, in a memory she treasures for a long time after, the lights quickly go down, the orchestra powerfully strikes up and her heart swells from the impact.

Les Miserable may not have been my first musical like the young girl in my story, but I truely wish that it had been. As a seasoned theatre goer, shamefully I had never ticked this off my list, but after a long wait I can finally say I have. And in style may I add, as I watched it in the big apple!

The staging was simple but effective with very clever props and a back wall projection, which added a touch of glam. The performers of this melodramatic story were incredible, in particular J. Michael Finley who played the lead character Jean Valjean and actually floored me with his talent.

But at the very heart of this whole production is undoubtedly the pop operatic score, with some of the most iconic songs of them all, and it is this that sweeps you off your feet and immerses you into a bleak and heart wrenching world.

I had been given the Academy Award ticket from a ~~friend~~ team mate. I didn't even want to go, I had a baseball game to play. I've been player of year for ~~two~~ three seasons, and captaincy is coming my way I can feel it. My friend couldn't make it, he had a fall that broke his leg so he gave them to me. You can't turn down a gesture like that. Seems as the match wouldn't affect our place in the league, I didn't see a huge problem. Other than the fact that I ~~don't like~~ hate pop music. He loves it. The guys think he is batting for the other team, if you know what I mean. We don't mind. He just needs to keep his mouth shut so our rivals don't start giving us crap. So, to be a good team mate and all, I took the tickets. I guess I was the first person he saw after the fall, that must be why he chose me. Like a coincidence right. So I borrows my dads tux and drive to LA. I know it's 400 miles from San Fran but I thought it could double as a trip to see a new city. Tick it off my list. That's why I went. I ~~got to~~ had to stand by the barriers on the red carpet. I saw her, Rachel Marron, is that her name? I thought my friend might want some pictures, you know, because he's a big fan and he fell. So that's why I have lots of her on my that camera you took. It's expensive so be careful with it, yeah. I like to take pictures of baseball games so I need a good camera, with a good lens. It's my dad's really, he uses it more actually. I went to my seat when ~~she~~ everyone went inside. I got a programme, because I like to know more about what I am watching and when each ~~performance~~ bit begins. I sat for a while and thought about my team. I hoped they were winning. The awards took ages to start so I kept thinking about baseball, the sport I play. When it started I watched and realised I needed the toilet. I'd not been since before the red carpet and wasn't too bothered about missing Rachel because I'm not a fan like my team mate. I probably should have stayed to take pictures but I got a lot on the camera. That's why there are so many on it. It's big in that place so it took me a while to find the toilet and it's so far away that's probably why I didn't hear a ~~gun shot~~ loud bang. When I got back everyone was screaming and the awards had stopped and I wasn't sure what had happened but I hope they catch him.

Bodyguard the musical took all of my expectations, bundled them up and threw them out of this world. I was not prepared for such an unforgettable show. It probably helped that I was on the front row, love of all the Whitney Houston songs and a fan of Alexandra Burke who plays Rachel - but take that all away and my response would stay the same (probably). It has a powerful soundtrack and even more powerful performers. The opening number literally blew my socks off and singed my eyebrows a little - there's a lot of fire.

If I was to be harsh, the second half was slower than the first due to the nature of the story, what with a stalker on the loose and all. On that note, the story doesn't follow the film exactly which is another slight disappointment but it's what I've come to accept from any stage adaptation.

Either way, I felt like I was at her concert, a real party feel emerged through the non existent fourth wall and a love for some pop classics, that you never forget the words to, reignited.

N.B. This is not an extract from the play. It is an original piece that I wrote.

Date - May 1957

Location - KDAV Radio Station, Lubbock, Texas, USA

EXT. KDAV Building Front.

The radio station is a small brick building with two large white windows and an overhead shade coloured with red and white stripes. A large sign is placed above the shade saying 'KDAV RADIO 1590AM'

You can hear a female three part harmony advert promoting a Maytag Wringer Washer.

INT. KDAV Studio.

We enter a small dark studio, which houses a mixing desk, two chairs and an older balding man called Hipockets Duncan. He is lying back in his chair, opposite the mixing desk, flicking through some notes. He indicates to a worker with a gesture requesting coffee.

As the track comes to an end, he pulls the microphone over to his mouth and presses a button on the mixer desk. The 'on air' sign lights up.

Hipockets Duncan: (Spoken with a texan drawl)

Why, good morning you folks out there. That was the Maytag Wringer washer, the best power washer this side of Texas. And this is KDAV 1590am, waking you up with sounds of good ole' country. But next up, a very dear friend of mine has just finished recording his first rock and roll album in Clovis, New Mexico. It's no other than our very own home grown artist, Buddy Holly and the Crickets. Yes, Buddy, that awkward fella you see about town.

He presses a button on the mixer desk. We see a screen that says 'Play track 103: That'll be the day.' The song begins to play.

Montage

For the next two minutes we see different shots of Buddy in a recording studio with the crickets. They are laughing, jamming and sleeping in there.

Montage ends

INT. KDAV Studio.

Hipockets Duncan slowly fades the track using a dial on the desk and leaves it playing quietly. He presses a button and the 'on air' sign lights up.

Hipockets Duncan: This is KDAV and that was Buddy Holly and the Crickets with a song that will no doubt get them to number one. He's one hell of a guy and I wish them all a long and successful career...

He presses a button and the 'on air' sign turns off. The track still plays queitly. He pushes the microphone away and leans back on his chair, resting his feet on the desk. An assistant enters the studio with his coffee. He takes a sip, puts it down and begins flicking through his notes whilst tapping his feet to the fading music.

“Welcome. Ladies and gentleman you are about to see a story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery—all those things we all hold near and dear to our hearts.”

(the powerful and truly revealing opening line)

This is one of my favourite musicals, so no pressure guys... Thankfully I was not let down by this touring production - in fact I was pleasantly surprised!

The musical is set in 1920's Chicago - who'd have guessed it? It closely follows two murdering vixens, Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly. Both whom desperately crave and fight for the media's attention. They are ushered along by a smooth yet sleazy lawyer who is no stranger to the paparazzi lifestyle; with a name like, Billy Flynn, I'm not surprised.

The first thing that hit me when the curtains opened, was the orchestra placed smack bang in the middle of the set! This is highly unusual as they are normally hidden away in a dark place under the stage - so I was excited to see what a difference this would make. The answer; a great one! I feel the visible band created a sense of inclusion on the audiences part. I honestly felt like I'd gone for a drink in a dodgy yet intriguing jazz club, enjoying the smoky atmosphere with a couple hundred other visitors. The band and the characters were fully aware of our presence, who made sure we followed their crime filled story. The orchestra were far from a hindrance as they became apart of the stage, where choreography and scenes were blended into the tier band stands; definitely utilising all of the available space on set.

So, I inevitably started comparing this stage version to the film version of 'Chicago' starring Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere. I know, I know. I shouldn't, as they're two completely different mediums, it would be unfair to do such a thing... but I have to at least acknowledge them. There were the obvious cinematography differences and lack of A-Listers but the stage version was a welcome change for these simple reasons:

1) Watching the 'bob fosse' themed choreography live, executed with excruciating precision was incredible.
2) It had a darker, slower paced and sexier feel - much more appropriate to the storyline.
3) Hearing the songs performed live by actors with impressive vocal skills always trumps pre-recorded versions.
4) Being a part of the live, jazz infused, underground bar (secretly a theatre) is not to be missed.

Ali Bastian combined a playful and naive Roxy with the seductive bite of a fierce lady. Perfection. Tupele Dorgu gave a fresh boost to the character of Velma, updating her to the 21st century. I have to give her credit for her high stamina as she powered through her many physically tough numbers and big ballads. Stefan Booth simply melted on stage as he played a smooth and manipulative Billy Flynn. He was quietly commanding which secretly screamed powerful. Finally I give a massive round of applause to the ensemble, as without them, it would not have been anywhere near as impressive. Ensemble you are unbelievably talented - I would class you the stars of Chicago.

This musical is guilty of murder and it is also charged on the account of being too dirty, devious and sexy. A combination not welcomed in reality, but sneaking away for a night of fantasy does no harm... right?

Culturebean at Sister Act: The Musical!

Yes, you read the title correctly, Sister Act has been transferred into stage musical form. I hear you, why wasn't this done earlier? But lets not question things, lets just bask in the glory of such an iconic movie adaptation.

So, we all know the story of Sister Act. An outspoken showgirl called Deloris Van Cartier played originally by the legendary Whoopi Goldberg, gets into some unpredicted trouble - which explains her need for a sharp disappearance. And what's more low key and simple than a convent; a complete contrast to Deloris's previous luxurious, public life. Throw a girl with an attitude and some funk, into a quiet, polite convent and you're in for some trouble. And don't worry, that is exactly what you get!

Thankfully this musical, which was co-produced by Whoopi herself, pretty much follows the original storyline. There aren't any big changes to the script, other than the fact that they burst into song every other sentence!

And I can honestly say that this musical was a show stopper, and made me want to dance in the isle, which I obviously didn't do, as that would've be very embarrassing... so I stood up and danced in the back row instead, like a decent eccentric person should.

The music is upbeat and catchy, smothered with a soulful sound. Note: All original music, which I was at first gutted about, but the sin will be forgiven as the new songs become just as catchy!
'I will follow himmm... But I will unfortunately not follow the film soundtrack...'

And obviously, one highlight of the show were the nuns. The first time you see them, they walk on in single file, head down, disheartened, singing... how do I put this nicely... BADLY! Simple staging input with a hilarious output. However, the moment Deloris captures their true vocal talent, and adds in a bit of her funk, you see an e'nun'ormous transformation. (Sorry, I had to) You'll never see nuns shaking their booty in dazzling diamanté gowns ever again. It is absolutely hilarious. It really is. Harmonious church nuns moulded into hair raising gospel groupies!

So, this huge production had some sideline comedy acts which made staggered appearances throughout. They came in the form of the three henchmen, hired to kill Deloris. I don't want to say much about them, as this extra comedy came as a nice surprise to me. But there is one scene where the larger of the men entices the audience in a very... adult way... You'll never see or hear an audience cringe in laughter so much. Enjoy ;)

One thing I would say, is that the opening is poor. It felt like a very slow start, with a forgettable song, uninspiring lighting and staging. A dialogue filled scene follows. I felt let down, my high expectations demolished immediately. But it is definitely worth fighting through this first 5-10 minutes as the entertainment soon kicks in. Just a note.

I want to end on a good note. A fantastic note. A magnificent note. (You get the jist) Cynthia Erivo plays Deloris, and she is one extremely talented performer - a triple threat; impressive character acting - incredible vocals - groovy dancing. Her recreation of the role, Deloris, made me double take... sorry, I mean it made me stare intently down my binoculars, just to check it wasn't Whoopi!!

Picture the bit in the film when Whoopi is stood in front of the choir, starting low, the nuns begin singing, she suddenly starts shaking her booty, then her head, then swaying side to side, becoming steadily more erratic, then throwing her hands up to mock praising the lord - this is EXACTLY how Cynthia plays it. Comedy gold.

Rising Star people, rising star!

Overall, a feel good musical which WILL get you dancing in your seats or at least tapping your feet.
If you like the movie - you'll love the musical.

Culturebean at Legally Blonde... the Musical!

Drum roll please. Bright flashing lights please. Loud poptastic music please. Oh my gawd you guys it's... LEGALLY BLONDE!

This, if I do say so myself, was the cheesiest thing I've ever seen. But that is NOT a criticism. I lo, lo, loved it. It took me away to a place full of joy, laughter and the colour pink!

It had bags of humour, as I was laughing every other sentence. The delivery man was a highlight, with his super tight shorts, masculine over exaggerated strut, AND his own theme tune. Every single audience member was clutching at their sides gasping for air with laughter.

Not forgetting the whole scene based on 'Is he gay or European?' This reminded me of the scene in the musical 'The Producers' when Roger DeBris is contemplating his Hitler role singing 'Keep it Gay'... If you don't 'get' this reference, watch the scene and you'll soon be nodding your heads in agreement. I could mention so many other hilarious moments but I don't want to reveal everything.

Basically, it's a right ole' chuckle.

The songs are upbeat and catchy.

'...ohmy gawd, oh my gawd you guys, looks like Elle's gunna win the prize...'

oops sorry... like I said, catchy!

The lyrics are meaningful and at times sarcastically aggressive. Example?

'as you pull her hair and call her a whore...'

Yes, that is a lyric.

Genius!

Although this is a fun musical, it has it's 'serious' moments, though very few.

(Not to confuse with the song 'serious' which is ironically very far from it)

As a lady myself, Legally Blonde felt so empowering to watch, as we joined Elle on her transformation from a stereotypical blonde american girl, into an intelligent (yet fashionable) young women. I loved watching Elle start to believe in herself. To watch her strength grow into proving to not only her ex Warner but to every other Harvard Law student, that her blonde hair and happy nature didn't mean she was dumb, made me go all goose-pimply! (don't think that's an actual word, but hey, I like the sound of it)

Faye Brookes played Elle with moving innocence and such a caring nature, whilst maintaining some inner strength. Beautiful!

The actresses playing Elle's best friends, Sinead Long (Serena) Sophie Isaacs (Marget) & Micha Richardson played the whole 'Greek cheer-leading chorus' with bags of energy and humour. I felt they were screaming out loud how a woman's friendship circle is based on an infrastructure of unbreakable support, the outer shelling of ultimate love and the inner interior of warmth and care; making me want to punch my fist in the air proud to be a woman. You go girls!

The cast of men were as you can expect, good looking and more good looking. Pretty good acting and singing... (insert note: may have been distracted and only focused on the whole - they were good looking thing...)

Iwan Lewis played the character Emmet, was the true prince charming of this story, which Elle dusted off a little to reveal a handsome chap! Supportive, loving and cheeky. We all need an Emmet in our lives girls.

Oh, I've not mentioned Bruiser yet. Once again, as you can expect, adorable. As soon as his little paws tapped onto the stage, the audiences hearts melted into a pot of 'awws' and even louder 'awwws'!

So, if you're looking for a musical that is full of glitz and glamour, with a sprinkle of magic then this is for you. Grab a cheeky glass of wine with the girls, don your brightest pinks and blondest wigs for an evening you'll be singing about for weeks.

I'm off to try and join 'Delta Nu' guys. Better start practising my Bend and Snap!
